Myofascial Release for Kids

Have you ever witnessed your child experiencing pain or discomfort and wished you could take it all away? I know that feeling all too well. As a teenager, I struggled with debilitating leg pain that made everyday activities a challenge. But through my journey of discovery, I developed my gentle myofascial release technique for kids that I wish I had known back then.

In this article, I’ll share my story and introduce you to a simple yet effective myofascial release technique that can help ease discomfort in kids.

My Story: A Teenager’s Battle with Leg Pain

Picture this: I’m a teenager, I should be full of energy and eager to take on the world. But there’s one problem—I’m constantly sidelined by excruciating leg pain.

It feels like tight a deep ache that runs from my knee to my hip, making it hard to walk, run, or even sit comfortably. Doctors offer little relief, and I begin to lose hope of ever finding a solution.

Then, one day, I stumble upon myofascial release—a gentle technique that targets the connective tissue surrounding muscles and organs. Skeptical but desperate for relief, I give it a try. To my amazement, I feel the tension gradually melting away, replaced by a sense of lightness and ease. It’s like a weight lifted off my shoulders (or should I say, off my legs).

My Gentle Myofascial Release Technique for Kids

I had to know more, so I went on a deep dive, to learn all I could about myofascial release. A journey that took 20 years (so far).

When my eldest son, Robbie was born, he had a scoliosis that made some movement challenging for him. I didn’t want for him to suffer the same way i had through my childhood, so I modified the way I did myofascial release, so that it was suitable for a 3 month old. He offered the purest form of feedback . I credit him with being my greatest teacher.

Now, fast forward to today, and I’m thrilled to share my gentle myofascial release technique—a simple yet powerful way to help kids find relief from discomfort. Here’s how it works:

  1. We start by having your child find a comfortable position on the massage table. The key is to ensure they feel relaxed and supported.
  2. I’ll do a quick assessment before I start work. Sometimes I’ll need to start somewhere away from where they feel discomfort.
  3. I’ll apply gentle touch to the areas in need, checking in with your child to ensure they feel comfortable.
  4. I’ll hold an area until I feel the tissue release, and then repeat, until I’ve released the restrictions through the whole pattern..
  5. Once the pattern is released, your child should a sense of release and relief.

Why It’s Perfect for Kids:

So, why is my gentle myofascial release technique perfect for kids?

Well, for starters, it’s gentle and non-invasive, making it suitable for even the most sensitive of little ones. Whether they’re dealing with growing pains, sports injuries, or just the everyday stresses of being a kid, myofascial release offers a simple yet effective way to find relief and feel their best.

As parents and caregivers, we all want to see our kids happy, healthy, and pain-free. Through my journey of discovery, I’ve learned firsthand the power of myofascial release in providing relief and promoting well-being.

By sharing my story and introducing you to my gentle myofascial release technique, I hope to empower you to help your child find relief from discomfort and embrace a life of vitality and joy.

After all, every child deserves to feel like they’re walking on sunshine—no matter what life throws their way.

Hugh started his health and fitness journey when he was a teen and overcoming his own debilitating leg pain through movement and massage.

He discovered that the key to his pain was in the ‘Myofascia’.

Hugh completed a Diploma in Integrated Body Therapies in 2003; he then continued to deepen his study into Myofascial Release, by studying at many schools including Myofascial Release, Personal Training, Craniosacral therapy Fascial Stretch and Structural Integration (Rolfing).

His hands on technique began as ‘deep tissue’, then, with the birth of his 2 boys, found that he needed a more gentle style in order to help them.

Nowadays, his hands on sessions use gentle release techniques that focus on systematically releasing adhesions in the soft tissue. His technique is gentle enough to be used on everyone from children, through the elderly, yet so potent that athletes will fell the results from as little as one session.
