Pain Is Like Fog: A Different Way to Understand Pain

Imagine standing beside the ocean on a foggy morning.

The fog becomes so thick that you can barely see the water. You might think the ocean has disappeared.

But it hasn’t.

The ocean is still exactly where it has always been. The fog has simply changed what you can see.

Pain can sometimes work in a similar way.

Pain tells you that something has changed, but it doesn’t always tell you exactly what is wrong.

This is especially important for people living with persistent aches, stiffness, or recurring pain.

Does Pain Always Mean Tissue Damage?

Sometimes pain is directly related to an injury.

If you fall from a ladder, experience a car accident, or suffer an obvious injury, pain can be an important warning signal.

But persistent pain is often more complicated.

Pain doesn’t always provide a direct measurement of tissue damage. Instead, it can also represent the body’s protective response.

Consider a simple paper cut. A tiny injury can sometimes produce a surprisingly intense amount of pain.

Now compare that with an athlete who finishes a game with a significant injury and doesn’t realize how serious it is until afterward.

If pain always perfectly represented the amount of tissue damage, these situations wouldn’t happen.

Clearly, there is more to pain than damage alone.

Your Brain Is Constantly Assessing Safety

Your nervous system is continuously collecting information from your body and your environment.

It considers things such as:

  • How much force is going through a joint
  • How well you’re sleeping
  • How much stress you’re experiencing
  • How restricted your tissues may be
  • How threatening a movement feels
  • How confident you are in your ability to move

Your brain uses this information to decide how much protection may be necessary.

That protection can take many forms.

It might be increased muscle tension.

It might feel like stiffness.

And sometimes, it can be experienced as pain.

In other words, pain can sometimes be your nervous system saying:

“I’m not convinced this is safe.”

Where Does Fascia Fit Into the Picture?

Fascia is connective tissue that surrounds and connects structures throughout the body.

It helps create relationships between muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerves, and other tissues.

When an area becomes restricted, movement may become less efficient.

One part of the body may stop moving well, so another part begins compensating.

A muscle may work harder than necessary. A joint may experience forces differently. Movement patterns can gradually change.

Your nervous system notices these changes.

It isn’t necessarily looking for perfect posture.

It’s constantly asking:

“Is this safe?”

If the answer becomes uncertain, the nervous system may increase protective mechanisms such as tension, guarding, stiffness, or pain.

Why Chasing Pain Isn’t Always Enough

When something hurts, it makes sense to focus on the painful area.

But focusing only on where the pain occurs may not always reveal the complete story.

A better question can sometimes be:

“What conditions are encouraging my body to protect this area?”

Could there be movement restriction?

Could other areas have been compensating for a long time?

Could certain movements have become inefficient?

Could the nervous system have become overly protective?

These questions can help us look at pain from a broader perspective.

Gentle Myofascial Release and the Nervous System

Gentle Myofascial Release isn’t about forcing tissues into a new position.

Instead, the goal is to provide the body and nervous system with new information.

By working gently with restrictions and movement, we can encourage easier movement and better communication between different areas of the body.

As movement becomes easier and the body receives signals that things are moving with less effort, the nervous system may decide that it doesn’t need quite as much protection.

When protection decreases, pain may decrease as well.

The goal isn’t necessarily to chase the pain.

It’s to help change the conditions that may be contributing to the protective response.

Think About the Fog

You can’t grab fog and throw it into the ocean.

You wait.

The wind changes.

The temperature changes.

The moisture changes.

Eventually, the fog begins to lift.

The ocean was never gone.

The conditions simply changed.

Our bodies can sometimes work in a similar way.

When the conditions surrounding movement and protection improve, the nervous system may no longer need to maintain the same level of protection.

And sometimes, the pain begins to fade as those conditions change.

Ask Better Questions About Pain

If you’re dealing with persistent or recurring pain, try not to assume that the painful area tells the entire story.

Instead, consider asking:

Is there movement restriction?

Are other areas compensating?

Has my body been protecting this area for too long?

Has my nervous system become overly protective?

These questions don’t provide a single answer for everyone. Pain is complex, and individual situations are different.

But they can encourage a more curious way of looking at the body.

Where It Hurts Isn’t Always Where the Story Begins

The fog analogy gives us a useful reminder.

What you can see isn’t always the complete picture.

Pain is important information, but it isn’t necessarily the entire problem.

The painful area may be where you notice the problem—not necessarily where the story began.

By looking at movement, fascia, compensation, nervous-system protection, and the conditions surrounding the pain, we can begin to understand the body as a connected system.

Sometimes the most useful goal isn’t to fight the pain.

It’s to improve the conditions underneath it.

And when those conditions change, the fog may begin to lift.
