Understanding Pain Through the Body’s Fascial Connections
When something hurts, our natural reaction is to focus on the painful area.
If your neck hurts, you may focus on your neck. If your shoulder hurts, you may work on your shoulder. If your lower back hurts, you may assume the problem must be somewhere in your lower back.
But the human body is far more interconnected than that.
One way to understand this is through the simple example of a tide pool.
A tide pool can look like a small, isolated pool of seawater. But it isn’t truly isolated. When the tide rises, it connects with the ocean and other areas along the shoreline. Water, nutrients, and living organisms are all part of a larger ecosystem.
The human body can be viewed in a similar way.
Pain Doesn’t Always Tell the Whole Story
The location where you experience pain isn’t necessarily the location where the underlying movement problem began.

If one area becomes restricted, another area may change its movement to help maintain function. You may not even notice these adaptations at first.
Over time, however, the body can develop movement patterns that become habitual.
Eventually, the area that hurts may simply be the area that can no longer compensate effectively.
That’s why the painful spot isn’t always the complete story.
Instead of Asking Only “Where Does It Hurt?”
A more curious approach is to ask:
“How did the body get there?”
This question encourages us to look at the history of movement and adaptation.
Are there areas that don’t move well?
Are certain muscles or joints doing more work than they should?
Has the body been compensating for a restriction for a long time?
Are there connections between the painful area and other parts of the body?
These questions can help create a broader understanding of movement.
Looking at the Whole Body
The tide pool analogy reminds us that appearances can be misleading.
What looks like an isolated pool is actually part of a much larger ecosystem.
Likewise, what feels like an isolated painful area may exist within a much larger pattern of movement, adaptation, and connection.
This doesn’t mean we should ignore the painful area. Instead, it means we can become curious about everything surrounding it.
